Wayang Golek (Rod Puppets of Indonesia)

Wayang is the art of puppetry in Indonesia dating to the 10th century. A performance art, it reveals the history and cultural practices of Indonesian peoples particularly those of Java. There are two types of wayang puppets: shadow puppets (wayang kulit), and wooden puppets (wayang golek). Wayang encompass a wide cast of characters to engage in the telling of folk tales and parables, many of which are drawn from the Hindu epics of Ramayana and the Mahabharata as well as local mythology and religious traditions. The look of the puppet gives clues to the audience of its identity and the role it plays in the story. (The Luminary, Issue 31, Spring 2017)
